None other than New York´s finest Victor Calderone is responsible for the first half of this month issue. Victor Calderone, world-renowned DJ and Club World magazine’s “Best Resident DJ” for his residency at New York’s Pacha, has heard it all. When you’re in the business as long as he is (20 years and counting), you understandably develop niches and certain trademark sounds that you’re known for. Fair enough. But name one DJ that’s survived and thrived for that long resting on the same sound over and over. Victor Calderone has long earned his bona fides among deejays as a sonic innovator in house, techno and tribal music. His sets draw thousands of people. His mixes listened to all over the world.

Raised in Turin, Italy, rhythm was his lifeblood for Yassin Ligali, also known as Yaya, from an early age. His father was the lead vocalist and percussionist for M´Bamina, a band consisting of musicians from Benin, Zaire, Italy and Cameroon. Well-versed in his father’s legacy, Yaya grew up playing drums and djembe, and at the age of 15, began performing as a percussionist in Turin clubs. Just one year later, he was already DJing, playing funk, soul, afrobeat, house and garage. Manu Dibango and Fela Kuti found a spot in his crate next to records by Masters at Work and Dimitri from Paris: contrasts of rhythm and structure that pervade his music to this very day.
